Welcome to the New Year.
With time passing by so quickly, it gets harder to take any real time to reflect on the milestones–in this case, a brand new year. We here in North America have busier lives than ever, a result I believe of our cultural drive to just have more and more. And so, any time set aside for anything more than “the middle-class chase” is rare. I’d love to stop and take stock of where I’ve been and where I stand today to help me better think about where I’ll be headed tomorrow. But for now, that’s not totally possible. And I suspect it isn’t for most anyone else.
And it’s not enough to whine about how little time we have for the better, more introspective pursuits. So I don’t. I accept that I’m in the middle of a race, that fast-paced lifestyle that makes most of us feel like we’re important and that we are significant. I hope I don’t actually buy the idea that being busy means being important. I only hope that in time, I’ll have amassed enough experience to gain some wisdom and insight and that that wisdom can be transformed into a strategy for pulling back a little to find some spiritual renewal.
After all, like any good artist knows, it’s not what strokes you paint or the notes you play, but the ones you consciously omit that makes for great works. Life is an art. And if you’re a life artist who prides himself or herself for creating greatness, you’ll know at what point you need to. Just.
Stop.
