Why the Flack Over the iPod Touch

my iPod touch

I was so excited to have finally received my iPod touch on Wednesday. It’s the third iPod I’ve ever owned after the first original nano (black) and a blue mini.

Right off the bat, let me say that this latest iPod is the most amazing portable device I’ve ever seen. Being in Canada, we won’t be seeing an iPhone probably for quite a while. So this’ll have to do for now.

And despite all the hoopla surrounding its release, there seems to be a pushback from the blogger community. Mind you, there is a disproportionately higher nerd factor going on among the blogging community (look who’s talking, duh), so we should expect a certain astuteness when it comes to technology, and these geeks pull no punches.

But it’s all a bit unfair that online critics have come to the point of making sport when it comes to dissing Apple, especially now that they’ve had so much success as of late. And because of this success, the fawning masses have grown by leaps and bounds and our fellow bloggizens have taken it upon themselves to take Apple down a few notches by decrying the touch for its lack of ultra geeky features like Bluetooth and file system access and editable calendar events, all the while forgetting that it’s at its heart a kickbutt media player. The idea that you can also watch YouTube and surf an uncrippled web and buy music on the fly is just icing on the cake. So what if I can’t check Google Maps or see the weather like on an iPhone or install third party applications without risking turning my beloved touch into a coaster? It’s a beautiful media player and it’s the prettiest, coolest handheld gadget I’ve ever had the pleasure to hold in my hands.

Besides, how many other mp3 players can you claim allows you to write up a blog entry and publish it, just like so?

Well, I just did right now. So there.
